Description

This course is designed to help the new and existing administrative staff  become more knowledgeable about the basics of the construction industry. This course will show how various stakeholders – owners, consultants, contractors, sub-contractors, manufacturers, suppliers and service providers fit into the Industry. Participants will engage in learning activities that will enable them to appreciate project delivery from concept to closeout.

  • Design Consultants - Engineers and Architects
  • A must-have course for intern architects and engineers new to administering construction contracts, calling tenders and recommending award of contracts to owners
  • Also, an excellent course for representatives of Owners (Project Managers and Coordinators) who are new to the role of capital projects

Course outline:  Delivered over two days.

Topics include:

  • Introduction to the Construction Industry – roles and responsibilities
  • Construction Documents – bid documents and format of specs and drawings
  • Tendering, Bidding and Award of Contracts – calling and receiving of bids
  • Format of Contracts – features and types such as lump sum CCDC 2, CM, Design-Build, Unit price
  • Other Legal – general principles of law, contract vs tort, what is a breach of contract, Lien Act
  • Risk Management in Construction -  insurance, performance bonds, L & M bonds, Liability risks
  • Construction Project Management & Administration – start up to close out basics

Instructor:

With 25 Years of construction industry experience in Canada,  Derek is a trained design professional having practised in architecture for over 15 years of his career collaborating on over $300 million built or contemplated projects.  As the Executive Officer of the London & District Construction Association (2007-2012) he acted as the employer bargaining agent to General Contractors in a successful strike free round in 2010. LDCA was also where he was introduced to the role government relations plays in construction while at the same time affirming his commitment to balancing interests of multiple stakeholders through industry advocacy and team collaboration.  A thought leader on construction project supply chain from conceptual design through total construction performance, legal and contractual concepts that result in better collaboration, his courses and facilitation are sought after by the largest to the smallest AEC companies in Canada working in the design and construction space.  Derek has developed 5 Gold Seal courses to date, a dozen corporate training sessions for global companies, and delivered to over 2750 construction stakeholders since 2013.

Derek is also the current Executive Officer of the Stratford and Area Builders' Association, the largest per capita home builders association in Canada.   The association is integrated with the OHBA and CHBA rounding out his exposure and expertise in both ICI and residential construction.  Derek is a resident of London, Ontario and started his career in Ottawa.
