Designed for the new Ontario Construction Adjudicator vocation which comes into effect with the second phase of the New Construction Act on October 1, 2019, this introduction to building methods materials and process style course has been designed by one of Canada's leading construction industry trainers and design professionals. It is designed for those who will seek to become Adjudicators in construction disputes in Ontario and across Canada who may not have direct experience reading and interpreting construction drawings, specifications or methods and material systems and processes associated with the installation of materials, for ICI and multi-unit or single family residential construction in Canada.
Learning Outcomes - Upon completion of this course, Attendees will:
- Gain an understanding of the basics of drawings, their format and reading between scopes of work, while being able to move around drawings comfortably
- Gain a clear understanding of the roles and responsibilities of designers working between disciplines and who is responsible in prime versus sub consulting roles
- Understand the tendering process and how contracts are awarded for various scopes of work – work packages and how that relates back to a project schedule and crucial milestones
- Understand and recognize where systems and communication breakdowns can occur, and the effect downstream that will have on project actors from beginning to end

This 2 day course is divided into 4 modules with 15 hours of in class instruction time. Lunch and snacks are included in the registration fee:
Module 1: Designers and Consulting Teams – 4 hours
The participants will undertake to learn the various design team arrangements, responsibilities and scopes of work through contractual engagements for various types of projects based on the owners desired construction delivery model. Using group exercises and lecture style, the participants will learn why different consultants work in varying capacities, based on requirements in regulation through building codes in Canada.
Module 2: Reading Drawings and Interpreting Specifications Basics – 5 hours
Using a model set of construction drawings, for a typical ICI building and land development project, the participants will explore the basics of reading the drawings, and understanding the acronyms and design terminology used on drawings. We will explore plans, sections, elevations, and schedules in detail and how they interrelate and correlate to one another through tagging. We will use a reference specification document that will demonstrate how a 3 part specification is used in the field on construction sites.
Module 3: Construction Teams, Subcontractors and Suppliers – 3 hours
Assembling a construction team forms the basis for this module. Participants will learn how those teams are selected, and the types of communication systems used between them to deliver on the scope of work, schedule and reporting that is necessary to ensure the project is constructed in compliance with the law, and the owner's requirements.
Module 4: The Building Process – Cradle to Grave – 3 hours
This module is designed to inform the participant how the entire kit of parts works together to move a project from contemplation and needs analysis through to completion and total performance. A candid real world exploration of consistent challenges is explored that may result in payment and/or payment processing challenges to meet the intent of the new prompt payment requirements.
Please Note: This course is meant to serve as a qualifying course for those seeking to learn the fundamentals of the adjudicator vocation. Those who complete the course will not be certified Adjudicators.
Offering clients and course attendees 25 years of construction industry experience in Canada, Derek is a trained design professional having practiced privately for over 15 years of his career collaborating on over $300 million in built or contemplated ICI and residential projects resulting in over 75 projects. As the CEO of the London & District Construction Association (2007-2012) he acted as employer bargaining agent to General Contractors in a successful strike free round (2010). LDCA was also where he was introduced to Government Relations and industry advocacy activities, having chaired the Construction Lien Act Amendment committee for the Council of Ontario Construction Associations. His work path led in 2013 to creating Constructionlab - now comprised of three facilitators covering topics of interest in vertical and civil construction - ICI and multi unit residential.
Derek maintains a clear understanding of the construction supply chain from conceptual design through total performance, and as such is a hands-on workshop and course developer/facilitator sought out by the largest to the smallest AEC companies in Canada working in the design and construction space. Since 2013, Constructionlab has developed 5 Gold Seal courses, a dozen custom corporate training sessions for global companies, and delivered workshops to over 3000 construction stakeholders. Attendees to workshops include project managers, lawyers, architects, engineers, procurement professionals and owners, sub-contractors and more. Derek has been a trusted advisor to the Canadian Construction Association, and Canadian Construction Innovations.
